For those of you who are planning a trip to Haute-Savoie in the coming days and weeks, it is well worth checking out the various festivals and events that take place across the region during the summer months. The biggest attractions in the next couple of weeks take place in the beautiful town of Annecy, capital of the region.
For the next 4 nights the 11th edition of the famous “Noctibules” festival takes place in Annecy old town – a nocturnal event which kicks off every night at 19:00 and finishes up at about midnight. Every year the festival has a different theme and this year has been named as “Fairyland, Fantasy and Dreams”. Over 30 street performance companies will put on displays of aerial acrobatics, music, theatre, magic and tricks to wow the crowds in this atmospheric setting amongst the cobbled streets, pretty canals and medieval buildings of the historical old town. For full details of the programme of events during the Noctibules festival, please visit the official Noctibules website.
Following hot on the heels of the Noctibule festival is the outstanding “Fête du Lac” - a musical and pyrotechnic celebration at Lake Annecy. The festival was originally launched 147 years ago in 1860, in honour of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. 1860 marked the year that the inhabitants of the hitherto independent country of Savoie voted to become part of France and the tradition of a grand nocturnal celebration has continued to today. The Fête du Lac takes place on August the 4th and kicks off on the famous “pâquier” parkland between Annecy Albigny, the old town and the lakeside. The celebrations start at 20:15 with a musical introduction in the park, followed by a spectacular fireworks display above the waters of the lake at 21:45. For those of you who have not seen the Fête du Lac and plan to be in the area it really is a must-see event.
