This weekend sees the famous Tour de France cycle race arrive in the mountains of Haute-Savoie for the most gruelling stage of the challenge to date.
On Saturday 14th July the caravan will travel just over 195km from Bourg en Bresse to arrive at the end of Stage 7 in Le Grand Bornand in the Aravis Mountains. These super-fit cyclists will have climbed 1,376m in altitude as they arrive at the famous “Col de Colombière” and commence their final descent into the mountain villages of Le Chinaillon and Le Grand Bornand. This part of Haute-Savoie is famous for its unspoilt, idyllic charm, with pretty farming communities that have become attractive and popular ski and summer resorts. Le Grand Bornand is a particularly fine example of a holiday resort which has successfully retained its alpine character whilst catering for French and international tourists. The local ski domain boasts 270km of pistes and the area is equally as popular with walkers, mountain bikers, paragliders and so on in the summer months. Nearby Lake Annecy offers plenty of water-sport activities and swimming beaches for cooling off in the alpine sunshine and it is little surprise that this part of the French Alps has been a draw for international buyers for a number of years now. The big advantage for many is the fact that although many buyers here are British, they have not overrun the area, ensuring that this part of France has remained quintessentially French. Please see below for a map of the Stage 7 route to Le Grand Bornand*. But it isn’t over at Le Grand Bornand; the cyclists have a short, overnight break before continuing their journey through the mountain passes of Haute-Savoie into Savoie, finally concluding their mountain adventure in the resort of Tignes. On Sunday they will cover 165km in distance and they will cross into Savoie at the “Col de Tamié”. Please see below for a map of the route of Stage 8*.
