We recently came across the inspirational story of Judy Armstrong; a dedicated and determined individual who is about to set off on the first ever trek right around the entire European Alps. Judy will walk solo for 3,300 miles and it is expected that her amazing alpine challenge will take her 8 months to complete.

Judy recently lost two close friends to cancer and the trek is hoped to raise awareness and £12,000 for Cancer Research. This is the longest walk that she has ever walked; Judy will walk an average of 15 miles per day for 220 days and will climb the equivalent of 28 Mount Everests. Most of the time she will be sleeping out in her tent and she will be starting and finishing her walk in the winter. Judy has sold her house to fund her trip and she will be taking a year away from work. If she completes her journey it will be the first time anyone has gone all the way around the Alps.

Judy starts her journey in March 2007, covering the first 600 miles in snowshoes and camping out in the snow. The trek officially starts in Monaco, passing through France, Italy, Slovenia and Austria, to within sight of Vienna and Hungary, before returning through Austria, Bavaria, Liechenstein, Switzerland and France again, arriving back at the Palace Square in Monaco in time for Christmas 2007, 8 months after she began. The fourth leg of her trek will bring her through Samoens in Haute-Savoie, before continuing on to the Swiss Alps. She is currently training in France and is busy preparing for the start of her epic adventure.

Judy’s planned challenge is a celebration of life as well as a remarkable test of both physical and mental endurance. She has dedicated her journey to her friends and set up her own website called Alpine Challenge where readers can find out more about her challenge as well as viewing daily reports on her progress, podcasts and photos.

Donations to Cancer Research can be made via Judy’s website on Just Giving.com. Judy is paying all the fees associated with her Just Giving account herself and no donations will be used to fund her journey.

We wish Judy every success and Good Luck for her amazing challenge, for more information please visit Judy’s website, Alpine Challenge.
